Top 10 Worst Home Decorating Trends of All Time
butterflylister
2/20/2008

We've all fallen prey (though we won't admit it) to some of the ugliest home decorating trends in history.  Here is a list of the top 10 worst decorating trends of all time:

Popcorn Ceilings

1. Popcorn Ceilings - Popular during the 1960's and 70's, popcorn ceilings were used to help eliminate echoes and reflective sounds.  This horrid ceiling trend usually contained asbestos and was prone to dirt, grime, and smoke stains.  What's worse, some popcorn ceilings often contained: (cringe!) gold glitter.

  1. Shag Carpets
  2. 2. Shag Carpets - Another revolting trend of the 1970's, shag carpeting was popular in pale yellow, red, lime-green, and worse yet: orange.

foil wallpaper

3. Foil Wallpaper - This horrifying trend of the 70's looked like it belonged in Ron Jeremy's porno set rather than in Grandma's bathroom. Eww!

Pink Bathroom

4. Pink Bathrooms - Be it pink tiles, pink countertops, pink walls (or all the above), the pink bathroom phenomena is another trend that has us all scratching our heads saying, "What the hell was I thinking?!"

 Orange Formica

5. Orange Formica - This design disaster of the 1970's adorned kitchen, bathroom, and bar countertops everywhere.  Hamburger orange, burnt orange, brilliant orange... was everyone high during the 70's?!

Wood Paneling

6. Wood Paneling - Born in the 50's, made popular in the 70's, perfected in the 80's - no home escaped the horrors of wood paneling.  Even our cars, station wagons, vans, and boats didn't escape the wood paneling trend.

 Bean Bag chair

7. Bean Bag chairs - Immensely popular during the late 60's and early 70's, bean bag chairs were the mod fashion staple every "rec room".  Don't write these comfy blobs of yesteryear off just yet - they're making a comeback with alternative fabrics and fillings like PVC and memory-foam.  The term Bean Bag has also evolved into "Oversized Sac" and "Foof Chair".

Vinyl Flooring

8. Patterned Linoleum and Vinyl Flooring - This cheap flooring trend of the 60's and 70's was usually highly patterned and extremely busy.  What's worse, it was typically brown, pale yellow, orange, or green (or all the above!).

 animal print

9.  Velour Animal Print -- The 80's and 90's saw an explosion of animal print fabrics. It adorned everything from gym pants (yikes!) to couches.  To make it worse, the cheetah, leopard, and zebra prints were popular in velvet and velour fabrics.

Severe Mold from Bathroom Carpet

10. Bathroom Carpeting - Whoever thought of carpeting in the bathroom should face the firing squad! The bathroom floor gets wet (ew toilet water!), water attracts mold and mildew, carpets suck it all in... any questions?

Wow, I think you hit them all! I have one more, which is more personal taste. Wall to wall carpet, especially over hard wood floors. The traffic patterns make it ugly fast, with stains, matting, and thinning. Area rugs are more practical, just replace as they wear out or become outdated.

How about 12" square cork tiles...on a whole wall. But wait! That's not all! It was also on the ceiling. Liquid nails was also popular, and it held the cork on permanently. Yuck.

Shag carpets are hideous? Foil wallpaper isn't far-out? Oh, pink bathrooms are so creepy! What's it like to go through life not having a soul or good taste?

In addition to the paneling, vinyl floor covering, and carpeting, there was the "sanitary" molding and lauan doors, both stained a dark brown, and aluminum windows and sliding glass doors. I know about all this junk. My 1970 ranch had all this, and 26 years after buying it, I've gotten rid of all the above! Hooray!

I remember my grandparent's burnt orange shag carpeting and the ugliest green couch you have ever seen. I used to tie the carpet yarns together like tying a shoelace.

Maybe another post should be down on bad home design trends. Sunken living rooms and split levels would be near the top. How about house designs with a gigantic garage dominating the view from the curb?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with pink (or blue!) bathrooms. If it was in good shape, I would die to have one. Kitchens too!

Are you telling me that this - http://retrorenovation.com/2010/02/24/1962-ge-time-capsule-kitchen-for-sale/

- is ugly? I think not.

And foil/flocked wallpaper can absolutely be done in a way that is incredibly attractive and modern.

Paper tile ceilings. These monstrosities go up once and god help you if you need to get into your ceiling after. There is no way to cut into these tiles without destroying the interlocked tile. They discolour over time in the same way that popcorn ceilings do, but unlike popcorn ceilings are almost impossible to paint.

Think you're being a little bit hard on these "trends." Sure, now that we're surrounded by neutrals, none of us would be caught dead with a pink bathroom (or would we? A delicate Victorian pink paint is a very nice touch with a clawfoot tub.). And the originals would look pretty terrible by now, faded and dated. But even lime green shag carpet had its place once. Remember, patterned linoleum wasn't purchased in sepia colors and in antique form--it was once brand new. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing an updated version of some of these trends. It doesn't mean you have to rob the antique store of its mildewed shag carpet and put it in your wood-paneled bathroom. But I think we've all become a little too frightened of the '70s and of color, and a little too fond of decorating in "hotel chic."

There are both good points and bad points in these trends. Some of them do make me a little nostalgic for my California childhood, though. Design options at places like West Elm or CB2 (better yet - Jonathan Adler) show how these trends can be updated to be less garish but still fun and funky. I personally think we've gone overboard with the bland, trite, home improvement box store, "I have a granite counter top" trend to the point of leaving spaces devoid of character and color. If you're tying to sell, that's different. But I've really enjoyed the return of respect for mid century design even if it rolls away from the 50s into the early 70s. Orange can be cool, and shag "rugs" can be hot. Even wood paneling can be done in a chic and eco-conscious way. But I'll give you bathroom carpeting (ridiculous), linoleum (I'd go for the terrazzo), velour (and other nasty 80s trends like MAUVE), and popcorn ceilings (second only to ceiling tiles) But I'm still one who'd love an Eichler or Neutra (in my dreams) over ticky-tacky jazz
